ביום חמישי הבנתי שאמריקה הפסידה במלחמה.
הגעתי לארה"ב לארבעה ימים, לצורך פגישה שהייתה אמורה להתקיים במנהטן ביום שלישי בערב. הפגישה לא התקיימה. אין יוצא ואין בא מהעיר הגדולה. ספק אם כל המוזמנים עודם בחיים. אין טיסות חזרה, וכל שנותר הוא להאזין לדיווחים ולקוות למקום על הטיסה הראשונה שתחזור לארץ.
אף פעם אינני נשאר ביום השבת בחוץ לארץ. זה יותר יקר, זה פחות יעיל; אבל ככה זה, מין כלל פנימי כזה. עכשיו את השבת בארץ ישראל כבר הפסדתי, ונותר רק להתפלל שתפילותיי בראש השנה תעלינה מארץ הקודש.
אי אפשר לברוח מן הדיווחים ממקום הטבח. זה כל הזמן באוויר, בבית, במכונית, בחנויות. נכנסתי למכולת שכונתית. מבעד למוצרים (ולמקלט של הזבנית), בוש מדבר אל האומה האמריקאית:
"אני מכריז על מחר כעל יום תפילה", אומר הנשיא.
מעניין, אני חושב לעצמי. לא זכור לי ראש ממשלה ישראלי שהכריז על יום תפילה. אפילו כשפרצה מלחמת יום כיפור הייתה גולדה 'מזועזעת', אבל לא זכור לי שהיא ביקשה ממישהו להתפלל. נו, טוב, אני ממשיך ביני לבין עצמי, הרי ההמנון שלהם מופנה לא-לוקים: "א-לוקים, ברך את אמריקה". גם האנגלים שומרים על קשר הדוק עם היושב במרומים: "א-לוקים, נצור את המלכה". ואילו הישראלים 'ניתקו מגע'. בהמנון שלהם, כל שנותר זו תקווה עגומה לחופש חסר פשר. למי בדיוק יתפללו?
"אני מבקש מכל אמריקאי", הנשיא ממשיך וקוטע את מחשבותיי, "שמחר, במהלך הפסקת הצהרים", כך ממש הוא אמר, לא על חשבון העבודה, כמו חבר הסתדרות מן המניין, אלא בזמן ה'לנאצ' טיים', כך הוא אמר…., "שיתפלל בעבור כל הנפגעים, בני משפחותיהם, והאומה האמריקאית".
"לכו לכנסיות, לכו לבתי הכנסת, לכו למסגדים, והתפללו", סיים הנשיא.
"האם שמעתי נכון?!", אני שואל את המוכרת, "האם הוא אמר מסגדים?"
המוכרת מהנהנת בראשה.
"בזה הרגע הפסדתם במלחמה", אני אומר למוכרת ההמומה, ופונה לחפש את מבוקשי בין המדפים.
אמריקה הפסידה במלחמה. האמריקאים נתפסו בדיוק באותה נקודה שבה נתפסה ישראל, וכמו שישראל נסוגה מתבוסה לתבוסה כך גם האמריקאים נמצאים עכשיו במסלול של התרסקות.
כשתימצאנה הקופסאות השחורות של המטוסים, יהיה אפשר לשמוע את הטייסים זועקים "אללא הוא אכבר" בשניות שלפני ההתרסקות. בשמו של 'אללא' הם טבחו בכם, ועכשיו הנשיא קורא להם ללכת ולהתפלל אליו.
הענק האמריקאי חטף סנוקרת קשה בהרבה מזו שהכניסה אותו למלחמת העולם השנייה. מי שהכניס לו את הסנוקרת ההיא חטף שתי פצצות אטום. לסנוקרת הנוכחית אין כתובת החזר. בשעות הראשונות היה נדמה שהנקמה האמריקאית תהיה מזעזעת ומחרידה. יהודים בארה"ב חשבו שעכשיו שרון יכול 'להיכנס בערבים', לפוצץ את מסגד אל-אקצה, לגרש את כולם, לעשות ככל העולה על רוחו, לנוכח תמונות הזוועה ממרכז הסחר העולמי, ותמונות השמחה ברמאללה. הוא רק יקבל מהאמריקאים מכתבי תודה. והאמריקאים, נקמתם ודאי תתגמד ליד תגובתה של ישראל. נקפו השעות, חלפו הימים, והנמר האמריקאי התברר כחתלתול חסר ישע. הנשיא האמריקאי עסוק בחיזורים אחרי אומות העולם ביצירת קואליציה מוזרה נגד כמה שוכני מערות באפגניסטן, וסנטורים מסבירים בשידור חי לאומה האמריקאית: "עלינו לזכור שהאויב הוא הטרוריסטים, לא האיסלם".
אמריקה נתפסה בדיוק באותה חולשה שבה נמצאת ישראל בשנים האחרונות. היא שבויה בקונספציה של עצמה, ולכן אינה מסוגלת לזהות את האויב ולהילחם בו. ולכן היא תפסיד, כמו שאנחנו מפסידים.
מדינת ישראל קמה על סמך ההנחה שעם ישראל הוא עם רגיל, ושעליו להקים מדינה רגילה, מבוססת על תרבות המערב, ולהתקבל למשפחת האומות. מכיוון שהעם הוא עם רגיל, עם ככל העמים, והמדינה רגילה – מדינה ככל המדינות, גם סכסוכי השכנים שלה הם סכסוכים רגילים, 'סטנדרטיים', סכסוכים רציונאליים, סכסוכים על שטחים, סכסוכים שאפשר לפתור אותם באופן הגיוני.
אבל העם היהודי אינו עם רגיל, וסכסוכיו אינם סכסוכים רגילים. המלחמה בנו אינה על שטחים אלא על עצם מהותנו כאומה יהודית. זו מלחמה נגד המסר החבוי בנו והמאיים לפרוץ החוצה אם נממש את הווייתנו הלאומית. בכך הם נלחמים, ואילו אנו משיבים להם במסגרת ההבנה שבה אנחנו רוצים להבין את המציאות, בשטחים ובביטחון, ואיננו מבינים למה הם לא מוכנים לקבל גם 100% מהשטח.
"המלך הוא עירום", צועק לנו ערפאת והורג שלושה בנתניה,
"אתה רוצה שנלבש לכבודך בגד אחר?", שואל פרס,
"הוא עירום", ערפאת צועק, ורוצח אם צעירה מאלפי מנשה,
"אולי נחליף לאדום?", שואל ביילין…
הוא ממשיך להכות, ואנחנו ממשיכים להציע פתרונות שאין בהם הודאה במציאות העירומה.
פלא שאנו מפסידים?
אותו הדבר קורה עכשיו באמריקה.
האמריקאים הם למעשה ממשיכי דרכה של הנצרות.
הם אינם נוצרים, אבל כנושאי הדגל של התרבות המערבית, הם ההמשך התרבותי של הנצרות.
אך מה הביא את הטרוריסטים לשנוא כל כך את אמריקה? מדוע הם מוכנים להתאבד כדי להרוג אמריקנים? הרי אמריקה אינה כובשת את ארצותיהם? להפך: רבים מהם ניזונים מִיָּדָהּ הטובה, וראה זה פלא – אפילו הקהילה הערבית בניו-ג'רסי, זו החיה ממש על סיר הבשר האמריקאי, זו שהייתה עלולה להיפגע פיסית ממתקפת האימים, אפילו קהילה זו צהלה ושמחה למראות הטבח המחריד.
מה פשר השנאה הזאת?
שתי בנות סוטות צמחו מתוך היהדות ויצאו לכבוש את העולם: הנצרות והאיסלם. שתיהן שונאות לאִמָּן, ושתיהן לוחמות זו בזו.
היהדות משלבת את מידת החסד ואת מידת הדין בהרמוניה ובמינון הנכון. באה הנצרות ונטלה את מידת החסד בלבד; בא האיסלם ונטל את מידת הדין בלבד.
המוסלמים רואים בעיניים כלות כיצד מצליחה התרבות מבוססת החסד הנוצרי להשתלט על העולם. יבוא העולם כולו וייהנה מקרן השפע הפתוחה לכל; לכולם אנו מציעים את הלחי השנייה, ואת הגוף כולו; בואו וטלו חלקכם בעושר; בואו והיכנסו בשערי מרכז הסחר העולמי. איננו כובשים אתכם בחרב. אנו כובשים אתכם בזהב.
"מדוע הם מביאים את המלחמות שלהם לכאן?!", זעק ברוקר מפויח למיקרופון הCNN. הוא כלל אינו מבין שהוא כובש. לא שטחים הוא כובש, אלא את התרבות הנגדית, הישר מכאן, ממגדלי התאומים.
אבל כל ילד מוסלמי מבין זאת היטב. מה שנעלם מעיני הפרשנים והסנאטורים בארה"ב ברור כשמש בצהריים לַחֵצִי השני של העולם. אין לאמריקה מלחמה עם אחד – בן לאדן. יש לה מלחמה עם כל ילד שייוולד מחר בקהיר, בעמאן, בבירות, או בעזה; ואם הוא מוסלמי – אז גם בניו-ג'רסי.
אמריקה לעולם לא תודֶה שיש לה עסק עם מלחמת תרבויות, או, למעשה, עם מלחמת דת. הודאה בכך היא הודאה כי, כמו במקרה הישראלי, גם הערכים המכוננים את אמריקה בטעות יסודם.
הם אינם אוניברסליים כפי שרצו האמריקאים להאמין. האושר שאליו שאפו בשם האנושות כולה הוא אולי אושר לקבוצה מסוימת מבוססת נצרות, אך הוא גיהינום לקבוצה לא פחות גדולה; וייתכן שהכף המכריעה במאזניים מתחילה לאבד ממשקלה – והכף השנייה מוסיפה משקל, החצי השני של העולם מתחיל עכשיו להגשים את שאיפתו שלו לאושר (אוי לה לתרבות שאושרה טובל בנהרות של דם), ואתם, האמריקאים, תתרגלו למציאות החדשה, כפי שהרגלתם עד היום את המוסלמים למציאות שלכם.
בפרשנות שכזאת היא לעולם לא תודֶה, ולכן לא תהיה מסוגלת להשיב מלחמה שערה. בדיוק כמו הישראלים.
הם אינם מזהים את האויב. הם מחפשים את הטרוריסטים, כפי ששרון רודף אחר מחבלים ספציפיים. הם רודפים אחרי הצרעות במקום לחסל את הקן. הם מפחדים מהקן. הם מפחדים מהתמודדות אמיתית – התמודדות מהותית בין ערכיהם לערכי האיסלם.
הם רוצים קואליציה עם מדינות ערב המתונות. הם צריכים להוכיח שלא האיסלם הוא האויב, ולא הערבים הם האויב, אלא הטרור הוא האויב. עד כדי כך מגיע הגיחוך, שגם ערפאת מוצא את עצמו מחוזר. ערפאת, האיש שהמציא את חטיפות המטוסים, האיש שהמציא את הטרור של המאה העשרים – אתו הם יעשו קואליציה, ובלבד שיספק להם את המסווה מראיית המציאות נכוחה.
והם אכן יתפסו את הצרעות. בן לאדן אבוד. אין שום סיכוי שאיש זה יחמוק מעוצמתה של ארה"ב. אז מה? כל ילד ערבי רוצה היום להיות 'שהיד'. יצטרף בן לאדן לפנתיאון השהידים – ומה בכך? מיליון מחליפים עומדים בתור, והם חסרי סבלנות. אמריקה נלחמת מלחמה פיסית באויב מטה-פיסי. הם אינם מסוגלים להבין את מה שאנו בישראל רואים יום יום: הורים מאושרים למחבלים שהתאבדו.
הרבה המראות ונחיתות נראה בחודשים הקרובים. משחתות ומטוסים, ומיליוני טונות של ט.נ.ט. בחולות המדבר העירקי ובמערות אפגניסטאן. הם יהרגו אלפי חפים מפשע, ואחרי כל זה הם יפסידו, כי הם לא זיהו את האויב.
תהיה שם 'סופה במדבר' (שם הקוד של המבצע הקודם) שלא נודע כי באה והלכה. יהיה שם 'צדק אין סופי', שם הקוד של המתקפה הנוכחית, צדק שאין לו מטרה, ולכן יש בו הכול חוץ מצדק.
אילו היה להם האומץ להכיר במציאות יכלו לנצח בקלות. בלי קואליציה, בלי שינוע צבאות, ובלי קיפוח חסר טעם של חיי אדם.
אבל הם עסוקים בלרמות את עצמם. לא רק הפוליטיקאים אלא כולם, עד אחרון האזרחים.
אחת התופעות המעניינות הייתה הצנזורה העצמית שהטילה על עצמה התקשורת האמריקאית.
ישבתי וצפיתי בטלוויזיה בהתפתחות האירוע בשידור חי. בתוך השעה הראשונה הובאו שידורים חיים מרמאללה ומשכם. נראו בהם המוני ה'פלסטינים' החוגגים את הטבח במנהטן. שמחתי על התמונות. לפתע נעלמו הדיווחים כלא היו. לאחר השעה הראשונה לא ראית אותם יותר. רק בעיתונות היהודית, ב'ג'ואיש פרס', ראיתי גם מאוחר יותר את התמונות הללו.
אינני מאמין שהממשל האמריקאי התקשר לרשתות התקשורת והורה להן מה לשדר. זה בא להם בטבעיות. אל תַּראה לאמריקה את המציאות הסותרת את ערכי היסוד שלה. אנו נדבוק בדרך האמריקאית ואתה ננצח. האומנם?
לא שידורים מרמאללה ולא תמונות משום מקום אחר. במקום זאת החלו להופיע אין-ספור ראיונות עם פרופסורים אמריקאיים בעלי שמות ערביים ומבטא ערבי. והמסר הסמוי: הנה אמריקאי שקוראים לו אחמד, והוא מוסלמי, והוא בכל זאת אמריקאי!
"אני מגנה בכל תוקף את המתקפה הזאת", אומר פרופסור ערבי כזה. "אתם צריכים לדעת שרוב הערבים אינם כמו הטרוריסטים הנאלחים הללו. רובם חושבים כמוני. אבל!", הפרופסור מוסיף ברוב ידענות: "כאשר אתם עוזרים לכיבוש הישראלי בפלסטין אתם גורמים ליותר ערבים להיות בצד של הטרוריסטים ולא בצד שלי…".
ולכן ישראל מחוץ לקואליציה. אפילו יחידת פינוי ההריסות המעולה, שהייתה מוכנה לצאת ולחלץ, נשלחה אחר כבוד חזרה לבסיסה. ישראל היא הפילגש שצריך להסתיר, ומלך הטרור, ערפאת, הוא האישה הלגיטימית והמחוזרת.
וטוב שכך, כי ביסוד הדברים אמריקה אינה בת בריתנו; אבל לא בכך עוסק מאמר זה.
למחרת הטבח פנה אלי מכר אמריקאי עשיר, ושאל לדעתי על המצב.
השמעתי לו את הגיגיי, ואז הפתיע אותי האיש בהצעה שאי אפשר לסרב לה: "אני מוכן לשלם בעבור מודעה על עמוד שלם ב'ניו-יורק טיימס', (זה לא 'מקור ראשון' וגם לא 'ידיעות אחרונות'. עיתון זה הוא בעל תפוצה של עשרות מיליוני עותקים, ומודעה כזאת עולה בערך 100,000 דולר), ואני מבקש שתשב ותנסח את המודעה". לא רציתי לעשות זאת, גם משום שמלחמת האמריקאים ברוחות אינה מלחמתי, וגם משום שקיוויתי שהיהודי היקר יַפנה את עושרו למטרות חשובות בהרבה, שבהן אנו עוסקים בארץ ישראל. אבל האיש התעקש, ואני ניסחתי את המודעה הזאת:
זוהי מלחמה תרבותית/דתית
נהרוג מיליון בן-לאדנים, והם ימשיכו לחגוג (כאן באה תמונת הערבים החוגגים ברחובות)
הם השמידו את הסמלים שלנו (תמונת מגדלי התאומים הבוערים)
עלינו להשמיד את שלהם (תמונת מסגד אל-אקצה בהר הבית, ואבן הכעבה במכה)
מזועזעים???
אמריקנים לא עושים דברים כאלה???
אמריקה תמשיך להיחרב עד שתבינו….
ידידי האמריקאי נדהם למקרא המודעה.
"אבל הם יתחילו במלחמת דת", הוא אמר לי. "יש לך מושג לאיזה מעגל נקמה ניכנס?"
"ומה קיבלתם עכשיו?", שאלתי אותו. "האם נראה לך שהם הרגו רק עשרות אלפים משום שבינתיים הם לא שונאים אתכם כל כך?"
"המלחמה הזאת היא מלחמת דת", הסברתי לו. "הם אינם מפחדים למות. הם מקדשים את המוות. הם מתים בעוד שמו של 'אללא' על שפתותיהם, ובגן העדן ממתינות להם שבעים הבתולות. כשהם כובשים מקום קדוש הם מיד הופכים אותו למסגד (החל ממקום המקדש ועד קבר יוסף). אתם אינכם מפחידים אותם עם הפצצות שלכם. במקרה הטוב תהפכו אותם לשהידים. הם כיוונו את המתקפה שלהם אל האלוהים שלכם. אין לכם ברירה. אתם צריכים לכוון את המתקפה שלכם אל האלוהים שלהם. כשתחריבו אותו יישאר להם רק העולם הזה. פתאום הם יפחדו מכל עלה נידף, הם יפחדו מדקירת סיכה. הם יידעו שלא רק הם מבינים את שפתכם, אלא גם אתם מבינים את שפתם, ואתם נלחמים בהם בכללים שלהם עצמם".
"חשוֹב על כך", הוספתי ואמרתי. "כמה אנשים אתם הולכים להרוג לשווא, וכמה קל לנצח במלחמה הזאת בלי להרוג איש".
ידידי השתכנע, אך לא העז לפרסם את המודעה. אחרי ככלות הכול גם הוא אמריקאי.
אותי הטריד ההמשך.
מכיוון שהאמריקאים יפסידו הרי שכמות אדירה של תסכול תלך ותצטבר. מגדלי התאומים יהיו רק ההתחלה. הצלחת מתקפת הטרור יצרה חשק שממש אי אפשר לכבוש אותו אצל כל תינוק ערבי לעשות מעשה דומה. מתקפות הטרור יגברו, ולאמריקנים לא תהיה תשובה.
או אז יחלחלו היטב דברי ההסתה של הפרופסור הערבי: ישראל היא הבעיה. וכמובן יחלחל גם המסר הנסתר: היהודים הם הבעיה.
לא יהיו פוגרומים באמריקה. פוגרומצ'יקים קטנים – אולי, אבל לא מה שהורגלנו לו באירופה. יש משהו טוב מדי באומה הזאת שלא יאפשר זאת. אבל איך יַראה יהודי את פרצופו ברחוב כאשר כל אמריקאי משוכנע שהוא איבד את פרנסתו, את רכושו, את הקרובים לו שנהרגו בפיגועי טרור ובמלחמה אין סופית –
בגלל היהודים?
הדרך חזרה לארץ ישראל הייתה קשה מאוד. כמעט 24 שעות ישבתי על המזוודות עד שהצלחתי להידחק אל אחד ממטוסי אל-על, ברכבת האווירית שארגנה החברה להחזרת כל הישראלים התקועים הביתה.
"אם זה אורך התור של הישראלים שרוצים לחזור לארץ", חשבתי לעצמי, "נשאר רק לנחש איך ייראה התור של היהודים ….".
תמיד אני כורע ברך ומנשק את האדמה בחוזרי לארץ.
מעולם לא קיבלה אדמת הקודש נשיקה חמה יותר מבחזרה זו.

On Thursday, I realized that America had lost the war.
I had arrived in the United States for four days, for a meeting that was supposed to take place in Manhattan on Tuesday. The meeting didn’t take place. People neither entered and nor exited the great city. I don’t know whether all the meeting invitees are still alive. There are no return flights, and all that’s left to do is listen to the broadcasts and hope for a seat on the first return flight to Israel.
I never spend Shabbat outside of Israel. Yes, it’s more expensive that way and less convenient, but it’s a personal rule that I live by. Now, I’ve already spent this past Shabbat abroad, and all that’s left is to pray that my Rosh HaShana prayers will be offered from the Holy Land.
It’s impossible to escape the reporting from the site of the massacre. It’s always in the air – in the house, in the car, in the shops. I went to the corner grocery. From behind the counter, on the cashier’s radio, Bush is speaking to the American people: “I declare tomorrow to be a day of prayer,” says the President.
Interesting, I say to myself. I don’t remember an Israeli Prime Minister who declared a day of prayer. Even when the Yom Kippur War broke out, Golda was shocked, but I don’t recall her calling on anyone to pray. So far so good, I continue the internal conversation… the Americans sing “G-d bless America”; the British, too, keep a close connection to the One who sits on High: their anthem is “G-d Save the Queen.” The Israelis, on the other hand, are “out of touch.” In our national anthem, all that’s mentioned is a dismal hope for a meaningless freedom. To whom exactly should the Israelis pray?
“I ask every American,” the president continues, interrupting my thoughts, “tomorrow, on their lunch break” – he really said that, like a good Histadrut member, so that it shouldn’t cut into their work hours – “to pray for all the wounded, for their families, for the American people.”
“Go to church, to the synagogue, to the mosques,” he concluded.
“Did I hear that correctly?!” I asked the cashier. “Did he say mosques?”
The cashier nodded her head.
“You just lost the war,” I said to the dumbfounded cashier and then went back to look for my items.
America lost the war. The Americans have gotten caught in the same misunderstanding that Israel has – and just as Israel has gone from humiliation to humiliation, so the Americans are on their way to self-destruction.
The American giant just suffered a far greater blow than that which ushered in her entrance to World War II. And the current blow carries with it no return address. In the initial hours following the attack, it appeared the American response would be dreadful and horrifying. Faced with simultaneous photos of the monstrous carnage at the site of World Trade Center and the ebullient rejoicing in Ramallah, American Jews thought that now Sharon could “give it to the Arabs”: blow up the Al Aqsa mosque, expel them, do whatever he wanted – and all he would receive from the Americans would be a warm thank-you note.
However, hours passed, then days, and the American eagle turned out to be nothing more than a helpless fledgling. The American president is busy running after other nations to form a bizarre coalition against a few cave dwellers in Afghanistan, and senators on live broadcasts are explaining to the American public that “We have to remember that our enemy is the terrorists, not Islam.”
America is caught in the same trap Israel has been in for the last few years: its distorted perception of itself doesn’t allow it to identify the enemy and fight against it. And so, it will lose just as we have been losing.
The State of Israel was established based on the assumption that the Jewish People are a normal people who should set up a normal state, based on Western culture, and that this state would be accepted among the family of nations. And since, it was assumed, the people is a normal people, a people like all the others, with a normal state, a state like all the others, then its disputes with its neighbors will be normal, standard, rational disputes, disputes about territory that can be solved logically.
But the Jewish people is not a normal people, and its disputes are not normal disputes. The war against us is not over territory but rather over our very essence as a Jewish nation. It is a war against the latent message within us that threatens to burst out if we actualize our national being. They are at war with this; yet we respond to them using a framework that we wish corresponded to reality, the framework of territory and security, and we do not understand why they’re not willing to accept even 100% of the territory when it is offered.
“The emperor is naked,” screams Arafat and murders three people in Netanya.
“Would you like us to dress in a different outfit?” asks Peres.
“He’s naked,” screams Arafat and kills a young woman from Alfei Menashe.
“Maybe you’d prefer red?” asks Beilin…
Is it a surprise that we are losing?
The same thing is happening now in America.
The Americans are continuing along the path forged by Christianity.
They are not officially a Christian nation, but as the standard bearer for Western civilization, they are the cultural continuation of Christendom.
So, why do the terrorists hate America so much? Why are they willing to commit suicide in order to kill Americans? After all, America’s not occupying their land. On the contrary, many of them are nourished by its generosity. And yet, wonder of wonders – even the Arab community in New Jersey, those that literally live off the fat of the American land, those that were at risk of physical injury from the terror attacks, even that community celebrated and rejoiced to see the horrible massacre.
What is the meaning of this hatred?
Two wayward daughters arose from within Judaism and went on to conquer the world: Christianity and Islam. Both of them hate their mother, and they are at war with each other.
Judaism combines the qualities of mercy and justice in harmony and in proportion. Christianity came and took only the quality of mercy. Islam came and took only the strict letter of the law. The Muslims see clearly how the culture based on Christian kindness rules the world. The entire world comes to enjoy their horn of plenty that is open to all. To all, they turn the other cheek, and the rest of the body as well; come and enjoy your share of our wealth; come to the gates of the World Trade Center. We don’t conquer you by the sword. We conquer you with gold.
“Why are they bringing their wars here?!” screams a debris-covered broker into the CNN microphone. He has no idea that he is a conqueror. He’s not conquering territory but rather the opposing culture, and from right here, from the Twin Towers.
But every Muslim child understands it only too well. What is oblivious to the American commentators and senators is clear as day to the other half of the world. American is not at war with one person – Bin Laden. It is at war with every child that will be born tomorrow in Cairo, in Amman, in Beirut, or in Gaza; and if he’s a Muslim – also in New Jersey.
America will never admit that it is confronted by a clash of civilizations – by a religious war. Acknowledging this would be to acknowledge that, as in the Israeli case, the values upon which the country was founded were at fault.
They are not universal, as the Americans want to believe. The happiness they aspired to for all humanity may be considered happiness by the sub-group whose life is based on Christian values, but it is hell to another group no less large; and it may be that the worm is beginning to turn. The other half of the world is now beginning to realize its aspirations for happiness (woe to the culture whose happiness is immersed in rivers of blood); and you Americans will have to get used to this new reality, just as the Muslims, until today, had to get used to yours.
The Americans will never accept such an explanation, and therefore they will not be able to retaliate appropriately in the war that has broken out. Exactly as in the Israeli case.
They cannot identify the enemy. They are out searching for “the terrorists”, just as Sharon hunts specific terrorists. They are chasing particular hornets instead of eradicating the nest. They are afraid of the nest. They are afraid of real engagement – engagement with the conflict between their values and the values of Islam.
They want a coalition with the moderate Arab nations. They need to prove that Islam is not the enemy, that the Arabs are not the enemy, but rather “terror” is the enemy. The grotesquerie has reached such a level that even Arafat finds himself sought after. Arafat, the man who invented hijacking planes, the man who invented 20th century terror – he they would include in their coalition, hoping he will provide a mask to hide the reality staring them in the face.
And they will find the hornets. Bin Laden is lost. There’s no chance that man will escape from the strength of the United States. Then what? Every Arab child today wants to be a shahid, a martyr. Bin Laden will be ushered into the pantheon of martyrs – and what of it? A million replacements are waiting in line, and they are impatient. America is fighting a physical war against a metaphysical enemy. They are unable to comprehend what we in Israel see every day: parents who are happy when their children become suicide bombers.
We will see many take-offs and landings in the coming months. Destroyers and planes, and millions of tons of TNT in the desert sands of Iraq and in the tunnels of Afghanistan. They will kill thousands of innocent civilians, and after all that they will lose because they would not identify the enemy.
There will be a “Desert Storm” (the code name of the prior operation) that too will pass unnoticed. There will be “Infinite Justice,” the code name of the current attack, justice that is purposeless, and therefore includes everything but justice.
If they had the courage to face reality, they could win easily. Without a coalition, without transporting troops, and without unnecessary civilian casualties.
But they’re too busy lying to themselves. Not just the politicians, but all of them, down to the last citizen.
One of the interesting effects was the self-censorship imposed by the American media.
I sat and watched live TV as the event unfolded. During the first hour, they showed the reactions in Ramallah and in Nablus live. After the first hour, these were never shown again. Only in Jewish papers, in “The Jewish Press”, did I later see such photos.
I don’t believe that the American government contacted the stations and told them what to broadcast. It came to them naturally. Don’t show America a reality that contradicts its fundamental principles. We will adhere to the American way, and we will win. Is that so?
No broadcasts from Ramallah and no photos from anywhere else. Instead, endless interviews of American professors with Arab names and Arab accents began to appear. And the unstated message was, “Look, here’s an American named Ahmed, and he’s Muslim, and even so, he’s American.”
“I condemn this attack utterly,” says one of these Arab professors. “You need to know that most Arabs are not like these nasty terrorists. Most of them think like me… but!” the professor adds with great erudition, “When you help the Israelis in their conquest of Palestine, you cause more Arabs to take the terrorists’ side rather than mine….”
And so, Israel is not included in the coalition. Even her excellent search and rescue unit, that was prepared to go there to rescue people, was politely greeted and then sent home. Israel is a concubine that needs to be hidden while Arafat the terror king is the legitimate wife returned home.
And it’s good that it’s that way, because fundamentally, American is not our ally; but that’s not the subject of this essay.
The day after the atrocity, a wealthy American acquaintance asked me my thoughts on the situation.
I shared with him my reflections, and then the man surprised me by making a suggestion that was impossible to refuse: “I am willing to pay for a full-page ad in the New York Times, (It’s not Makor Rishon and it’s not Yediot Aharonot. The paper has a distribution in the tens of millions, and an ad of that size costs around $100,000 [in 2001]). Could you please sit and draft the text for the advertisement?” I didn’t want to do this, in part because the American’s war against phantoms is not my war, and also because I had hoped that this dear Jew would use his fortune to advance far more important goals here in the Land of Israel. But the man insisted, and so I drafted this ad:
This is a clash of civilizations / a religious war.
We can kill a million Bin Ladens, and they will continue to celebrate (insert photo of Arabs celebrating in the streets)
They destroyed our symbols (picture of the Twin Towers burning)
We must destroy theirs (pictures of the Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount and the Black Stone of Mecca)
Shocking???
Americans don’t do things like that???
America will continue to be destroyed until it understands….
My American friend with dumbstruck upon reading the ad.
“But they will begin a holy war,” he said to me. “Do you have any idea the cycle of revenge we’d be getting into?”
“And what did you get now?” I asked him. “Do you think they killed thousands because they don’t really hate you?”
“This is a holy war,” I explained to him. “They aren’t afraid of dying. They sanctify death. They die with the name of Allah on their lips, and in Heaven seventy virgins greet them. The moment they conquer a holy place, they immediately convert it into a mosque (from the Temple Mount to Joseph’s Tomb). Your bombs don’t frighten them. In the best case, you’ll transform them into martyrs. Their attack was an offering to their god. You have no choice. You have to focus your retaliation on their god. When you destroy that, all that will be left to them will be this world. Suddenly, they will be afraid of every scattered leaf, they’ll be afraid of a pinprick. They will know that not only do they understand your language, but that you understand their language, and that you fight them using their own rules.”
“Think about it,” I added. “You are about to kill so many people; in vain. And it would be so easy to win this war without killing a man.”
My friend was convinced, but he didn’t dare run the ad. After all, at the end of the day, he too was an American.
I was worried about the future.
Since the Americans were going to lose, a huge amount of frustration would build up. The Twin Towers would be just the beginning. The success of the terror attack would launch an unquenchable lust in every Arab child for a similar deed of greatness. There would be more terror attacks, to which the Americans would have no answer.
Then the incitement of the Arab professor would truly begin to permeate American society… Israel is the problem. And, of course, the hidden message will also ooze in: the Jews are the problem.
There won’t be pogroms in America. Maybe mini-pogroms, but not what we were accustomed to in Europe. There’s something too good in this nation, something that won’t allow that. But how will a Jew show his face in the street when every American is convinced that he lost his livelihood, his savings, and his loved ones who were murdered in terror attacks or killed in an endless war – because of the Jews?
The return trip to Israel was very hard. I sat on my suitcases for almost 24 until I was able to squeeze myself onto one of the El Al flights that had been organized to bring back all the Israelis who had been stranded.
“If this is the length of the line of Israelis who want to go home,” I thought to myself, “we can only imagine what the line of Jews will look like….”
I always kneel and kiss the ground when I return to the Land of Israel.
Never did the Holy Land receive a warmer kiss than upon this homecoming.
